The Copperas Cove Fire Department hosts an “Open House” each year in October as part of Fire Prevention Month activities. During the Open House the public is invited to meet the staff, tour the station, and learn more about the fire department.
The open house is filled with opportunities for the public to view displays of tools and equipment used in today’s emergency services, including 12-lead heart monitors, “jaws of life”, firefighting clothing, and thermal imaging cameras. The department has many informational “stations” for communications, fire prevention, and emergency management where informational brochures are available as well as the opportunity to speak with the individuals who perform those duties for the city.
Sparky the Fire Dog and Freddie the Fire Truck are on hand to make sure the kids are entertained. Fire trucks are open so kids can climb inside and families are welcome to take photographs, with or without firefighters. Refreshments make the afternoon even more fun.
Finally, and most importantly, citizens are provided an opportunity to be “up close and personal” with the men and women of the fire department in order to simply chat or to ask that burning question that they have always wanted to know.
