About Copperas Cove

Welcome to Copperas Cove, “The City built for Family Living”. Our friendly community, nestled between five hills in Central Texas, is a wonderful place to call home!

Founded in the 1870’s as a small rural ranching and farming community, Copperas Cove has now grown to be the largest city in Coryell County with more than 30,000 residents. The name Copperas Cove was inspired by water from a nearby spring that had a mineral taste. Two major events occurred in Copperas Cove’s history that gave a boost to the local economy and the population and improved Copperas Cove’s fortunes. These were the expansion of the railroad into the area in the late 1880’s and the construction of Camp Hood (Fort Hood) in 1942.

Neighbor to Fort Hood on the West, and centrally located in the heart of Texas on Highway 190 between IH-35 and scenic US-281, Copperas Cove is a great place to start a new business or relocate an existing one. Copperas Cove, a city with a proud heritage and a bright future, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for its citizens. Pleasant neighborhoods are located throughout the city with many options in sizes, prices and architectural designs of homes. There are many choices for buyers seeking a home for a small family, a growing family or one with an abundance of plush amenities. Prime locations, such as areas with views of the hill country or overlooking a golf course, have been developed into prestigious neighborhoods with executive homes.

Rural living is also available. Many developments surrounding the city provide homes with acreage. Wild turkey, deer, armadillos and roadrunners are a common sight in the rolling hills surrounding Copperas Cove. The wildlife, large oaks and mesquite sage and cacti form a picturesque scene of country living, yet the conveniences of the city are only a short distance away.

With one of the lowest crime rates in all of Central Texas and a school district recognized by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for excellence in education, Copperas Cove is an ideal place to live and to learn. Copperas Cove Independent School District includes seven elementary schools, two intermediate schools, two junior high schools, and one high school. CCISD is highly regarded by the townspeople and the educational agencies throughout the state for the quality education offered to students. Local support and interest in the young people and the school system have been determining factors in promoting the high achievement levels obtained by students on state and national standardized tests. The many awards, trophies, and certificates received by students and faculty alike demonstrate the professionalism, ability and caring of the entire school system. In addition to the public schools, private kindergartens and parochial schools are available.

Copperas Cove’s schools have a reputation for a strong curriculum enriched by the creative instruction of talented and skilled teachers, preparing students for successful futures in the workplace and in higher education. Central Texas College and Texas A&M Central Texas University are both located just outside of Copperas Cove on Highway 190. Texas A&M Central Texas offers 50 bachelors and graduate degrees to those entering with 30 or more transferable hours.

Recreation is bountiful in Copperas Cove. The city park, with meandering creeks running through tree shaded grounds, has a picnic area, swimming pool, tennis court, and plenty of room for baseball games, soccer and enjoying a lazy afternoon. Copperas Cove boasts an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, seven parks- two with public swimming pools and a modern public library. Copperas Cove has long been recognized and promoted as the bike/Run capital of Central Texas. The Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau hosts several bike runs and festivals each year, drawing locals and visitors from across the state.

Copperas Cove is a flourishing city with much to offer its residents of all ages.
