Flood Insurance Program (FEMA)

As of January 1, 2011, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) will utilize a new flood insurance rating option to help reduce the financial burden placed on property owners whose buildings are newly mapped into a high-risk flood area. The PRP Eligibility Extension document below contains answers to frequently asked questions.

The City of Copperas Cove participates in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The program provides affordable flood insurance to property owners located both in and out of the floodplain.

The NFIP maps show the location of the 1% chance flood, commonly referred to as the Base Flood or the 100-year floodplain. The name “100-year floodplain” can be misleading and is being replaced with the term “1% chance flood.”The wording indicates a severe flood with a 1% chance of occurring in any given year. Please be aware that multiple “1% chance floods” can occur in a single year.

Property owners need to understand that floods can occur at any time and with any frequency. As a result, FEMA and the NFIP strongly recommend that all property owners have flood insurance because any property can experience a flood. You do not have to be in a mapped floodplain to be flooded.

Typically, homeowner insurance policies do not include flood insurance. Property owners are encouraged to review the NFIP maps and discuss insurance options with their insurance provider.
